Survival Gardening

In addition to storing food to help you survive an emergency, you may want to consider survival gardening. In the event that you are forced to provide food for your family for more than just a few weeks, it would be prudent to have seeds and supplies on hand to grow your own produce. In addition to supplementing your food stores, it is an excellent way to insure good nutrition that only fresh fruits and vegetables can provide.

Growing your own food allows you to be self-sustaining. Gardening provides exercise and contributes to mental and physical well being.  If you start now, you can save money on your food preservation by growing your own food to dehydrate and can in addition to having fresh food to eat.

Some things to consider about survival gardening is the type of soil you have, the amount of space you have to work with and the type of plant life that soil and space can support. You may have to pick and choose what you can grow in the area in which you live.

If your space is limited or your soil only suited for some plant types, choose those that are higher in calories and nutritional content. This approach allows you to harvest the best value from your survival garden.

You will also want to use survival seeds or non-hybrid seeds. Hybrid plants are genetically engineered. Seeds harvest from hybrid fruits may not produce the same type of produce as the original, seeds did. Heirloom seeds are a good choice. Seeds you save from heirloom plants will produce the same fruits the following season. Seeds should be allowed to dry out naturally and then stored in a cool place, just as if they were experiencing a natural winter.
